The River Gambia is one of the most significant waterways in the region. It is along this route that American author Alex Haley traced his Roots and wrote his famous book of that name. Trips to James Island to witness the history of slavery in the area are made by river boats which are escorted on their journey by hump back dolphins. The creeks around the river are wonderful venues for fishing where expert and novice alike can enjoy the delights of the sport. The giant mammals and big game associated with East African long haul destinations, are no longer resident in this part of West Africa. However The Gambia has some interesting and unusual wildlife to compliment its many species of birds and fishes. Hippopotami, Baboons, Giant Lizards, Crocodiles, Monkeys, Lemurs and Wild Boar can often be experienced in close proximity... and really in the wild. The real Gambia is not too hard to find and can be briefly sampled on a landrover day trip or in depth by selecting one of the African style holiday base camps from which to explore the inner reaches of the River Gambia and its townships leading on to the African interior. Eco-tourism in The Gambia has many rewarding and relaxing experiences for travellers tired of the hustle and bustle of typical Eurolife or indeed the typical Euro-Vacation. |
