The Culture

The population of around one million consists of different tribes each with their own language, mainly Mandingoes, Jolas, Wollofs, Fulas and Sarrahulays. Most however speak excellent English and some French and German as well! Although there is poverty there is virtually no crime and the people are some of the friendliest in the world. Many visitors like to bring small gifts to hand out as they travel around. Outgrown children's clothing and school items are always well received.

Shopping in the markets is an experience not to be missesd with bargaining being the name of the game. Beeautiful jewellry, hand made batik, wood carvings, all at really low prices. Gambian tailors are also gaining a reputation with their ability to copy existing designing at amazing prices. Serrekunda Bakau and Banjul have the main markets, but beware, they're not for the faint-hearted, but they cetainly offer the authentic African experience.

Everywhere you go you in The Gambia you will encounter all sorts of colourful characters whether it be stroking live crocodiles or the local wrestling match. Maybe the Football Stadium. Keep a lookout for the old man that lives in a tree trunk!
