Banjul, the capital of The Gambia, is a ten minute car ride away and is a must to visit during your stay, but then return to the peace and tranquility of this oasis hotel. In pre-independence days it was called Bathurst and is now the government headquarters. Situated on St Mary's Island where the Gambia River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It was founded by the British in 1816 as a trading post and a centre for supressing the slave trade. Built in 1996, it commands views across the city and is a symbol of the countrys new direction Banjul International Airporthas boasted one of the finest runways in the world. Good enough for the Space Shuttle has been the motto as it was indeed developed by NASA and the United States Government to serve as an emergency landing site for the space programme due to its strategic location. Now it is served by the new airport terminal building, opened in October 1997, designed and equipped with modern facilities to an International standard including mechanised baggage handling.
